Ninth graders at Warren County High School in Ms. Perry's Career Planning class have begun a large project: cataloguing all Warren County food places using GPS and GIS Mapping equipment. At the end of this project, they will have created an online, interactive map of Warren County that pinpoints convenience stores, grills, grocery stores, restaurants, fast food joints, and all places where the public can access food. Information on whether the store carries fresh and/or local food, photos, and other quick facts accompany each pinpoint. In the process, students are learning about different careers that use these devices and techniques as well as the importance of local food.

The students' first step was to create a mind-map of their personal food places. Where do they go to access food? Each student drew a rough sketch of their food locations, including every place they associate with food and where this food comes from. These sketches will be helpful when it comes to locating places on our map in many different Warren County communities.

On November 12, twenty participating students visited NC A&T University to learn how to operate Garmin GPS devices. Exploring the campus on a scavenger hunt, they located and marked certain spots using the Garmins. Led by Dr. Blue-Terry, the 4-H STEM Specialist at A&T, they also learned about different careers that use this technology.

The ninth graders are currently performing a self-assessment, where they catalog locations of food places in their own community (recalling information they generated on their mind map). Next, we will create a comprehensive list of food places in Warren County using this information, and embark on mini-field trips to catalog this data. Stay tuned!
