Robert Clary’s Carpentry class at Warren County High School built three raised beds for a brand new garden at Northside Elementary School. The carpentry students presented the entire fourth grade at Northside with the beds, describing the steps they took to create the structures and what materials they used.
Northside’s fourth grade teachers, Ms. Dakisha Perry, Ms. Jaycynthia Robinson, and Ms. Shannon Cummings, will work with FoodCorps Service Member Caroline Stover to integrate the garden into their classroom curriculum. Ms. Perry’s class has already used this tool to reinforce concepts of perimeter, area, and unit conversions.
Students will continue to review math concepts with the garden project, as well as use it to conduct Reading, Science, and Social Studies activities while they learn to grow their own food at school.
This school garden is a project between Northside Principal Ms. Shelia Washington and the 4th grade teachers and students; FoodCorps North Carolina in Warren County; Working Landscapes who donated the materials; Horticulture Agent Paul McKenzie of NC Cooperative Extension; and Mr. Clary’s Carpentry class. Volunteers are also welcome to participate, and encouraged to call NC Cooperative Extension at 257-3640 for more information.
