Mr. Sauegling and Ms. Sahai, both EC teachers at Warren County High School, completed an incredible project with their students last semester using their school garden. They first led a discussion about hunger in our community and globally. Students discussed the causes and effects of hunger, and what they could do to address it in our community.
One solution the students discussed was to plant food for the hungry in our school garden. The students planted food for themselves as well, but everything planted in their specific "row for the hungry" would benefit the food bank in time for Christmas.
Each week of the semester, classes received a garden visit as a reward for good behavior and academics to care for their plants and monitor their growth.
Students donated a huge box of collard greens to Loaves and Fishes in Warrenton on the last day of the semester, and enjoyed cooking some of the greens themselves in the classroom to celebrate.
