After many setbacks due to weather and scheduling, GIS field trip #1 is complete! Ms. Perry's students went out into the county to collect data points, photos, and information at all the food places they identified in Norlina, Oine, and Drewery communities. Mr. Traylor, our bus driver, provided much assistance as we navigated these back roads to find community gardens, farm stands, corner stores, and restaurants.

To the left, Justin marks the latitude and longitude for Munchie's restaurant on his Garmin device. Meanwhile, Robert collects information from the store manager, and Tyrek photographs the process. This team and their classmates completed almost 20 stops, recording data efficiently and accurately. See below where students visited Richard Holtzmann's cantaloupe farm in Ridgeway and the Church of St. Delight's community garden in Drewery.  Well done Ms. Perry's 3rd period and all our community partners!

Cantaloupe Farmer Richard Holtzmann shows the group photographs of his operation in the 50's. His farm started with his great grandfather, a German immigrant, who helped select the famous Ridgeway cantaloupe.

At the Church of St. Delight, Gavin spots some turnips in the garden and goes to check them out. Students were impressed that the church funds the garden for community members to come and pick on their own.
