Warren County High School's garden team got a special opportunity to visit with Food Safety expert Ashley Chaifetz. Chaiftez traveled from UNC's Department of Public Policy to speak to students about safe practices in our garden. With information collected with Ben Chapman, Food Safety Specialist from North Carolina State University, students learned what can happen if you do not take care to ensure hands, tools and supplies are properly cleaned before visiting the garden. Students also discussed proper composting procedures, fencing, varmint control, and limiting the use of manure in school gardens to ensure food safety.
Especially since students plan on selling their produce to local restaurants and community members, this lesson was very important in ensuring they provide a safe product. Thank you for making the trip Ms. Chaifetz!
