Today, Ms. Simons' students at Vaughn Elementary began a vermiculture project in their classroom, creating a cozy home for their new composting worms!
First, they ripped up newspapers and wetted them as bedding for the worms.
Then, we chopped up pumpkin, a worm's favorite food, to begin its decomposition process. The pumpkin pieces will be worm meals for the next few weeks, along with lunchroom leftovers.
Once we weighed and measured their food (each worm eats up to half its weight a day!), we added the bedding, a meal, and worms to the bin. Students will continue to monitor and feed their classroom pets, and to learn more about the composition process.
