After many setbacks due to weather and scheduling, GIS field trip #1 is complete! Ms. Perry's students went out into the county to collect data points, photos, and information at all the food places they identified in Norlina, Oine, and Drewery communities. Mr. Traylor, our bus driver, provided much assistance as we navigated these back roads to find community gardens, farm stands, corner stores, and restaurants.

To the left, Justin marks the latitude and longitude for Munchie's restaurant on his Garmin device. Meanwhile, Robert collects information from the store manager, and Tyrek photographs the process. This team and their classmates completed almost 20 stops, recording data efficiently and accurately. See below where students visited Richard Holtzmann's cantaloupe farm in Ridgeway and the Church of St. Delight's community garden in Drewery.  Well done Ms. Perry's 3rd period and all our community partners!

Cantaloupe Farmer Richard Holtzmann shows the group photographs of his operation in the 50's. His farm started with his great grandfather, a German immigrant, who helped select the famous Ridgeway cantaloupe.

At the Church of St. Delight, Gavin spots some turnips in the garden and goes to check them out. Students were impressed that the church funds the garden for community members to come and pick on their own.

Mariam Boyd Elementary's Culinary Club hosted a fundraiser for teachers and staff yesterday, raising a whopping $185 for our club! During Tuesday's meeting they made whole wheat dinner rolls from scratch, dressing for a fresh kale salad, and a delicious New England Ham and Bean Stew. They sold plates during lunch for $5 a piece, and $6 quarts to those who loved it enough to bring some home.

Ms. Perry's ninth grade students at Warren County High School have completed the next phase of their GIS Mapping Project! Most recently, they have successfully logged all known food places onto a physical map in our classroom (see finished map below). They completed a self-assessment focused on food places around their home, interviewing relatives and neighbors for any gaps in their knowledge. Then, we found and marked each place on the map, color-coded with a different dot for each type of establishment.

Assuming there is no more wintry weather delays, we will soon be embarking on our first trip to log these points on our digital GIS map of the county's food places! Stay tuned for updates.

Mr. Sauegling and Ms. Sahai, both EC teachers at Warren County High School, completed an incredible project with their students last semester using their school garden. They first led a discussion about hunger in our community and globally. Students discussed the causes and effects of hunger, and what they could do to address it in our community.

One solution the students discussed was to plant food for the hungry in our school garden. The students planted food for themselves as well, but everything planted in their specific "row for the hungry" would benefit the food bank in time for Christmas.

Each week of the semester, classes received a garden visit as a reward for good behavior and academics to care for their plants and monitor their growth.

Students donated a huge box of collard greens to Loaves and Fishes in Warrenton on the last day of the semester, and enjoyed cooking some of the greens themselves in the classroom to celebrate.
